Ok so this is port mortem and update post. Thank you for playing and rating to those that did because I have learned a lot over the course of this jam.

UPDATE

  • Slowed the hunger bar down by a considerable margin.  Down from +0.1 per second to 0.05.

POST MORTEM

Ok lets start with the good. I finished the game, which is still a surprise to me at this point. I managed to scrounge up some pretty decent sprites (I am not an artist). I agree with most of my code design on review and initial game design. Also my iteration of the initial idea into the end result was very quick.

Onto the bad, I did not properly playtest the game. I was only concerned about function and not entirely on the overall experience of the player. I also should have premade certain things to a degree to streamline my jam process, giving me more time to focus on other aspects of gameplay. Pre making things like menus and the main scene flow would have been a great time save. There are also certain collision bugs that I am aware of but they did not occur often enough to be worth tracking and fixing. At least from what I have seen.

Moving forward, I will start pre-making menus and whatever I can before the game starts to leave as much time for core game development as possible. I will read up on some game development books to further enhance my process. Maybe throwing some game design books in there couldn't hurt, surely (Anyone with reccomendations go ahead). The next jam I enter I will try to implement the things I've learned, which will hopefully be soon.

Thanks for reading the whole way through or just stopping by. And hopefully see ya at the next jam.
